United States-China Relations and TikTok Agreement: Discussion Points between Trump and Xi in Their Phone Conversation
In a series of significant discussions held in Madrid, Spain, the leaders of the United States and China, President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, engaged in a pragmatic, positive, and constructive conversation that covered a range of pressing issues.
The conversation encompassed trade disputes, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the Fentanyl crisis, and the upcoming APEC Summit in South Korea. Both leaders agreed to meet at the APEC Summit next month.
Regarding trade, China urged the US to avoid taking unilateral trade-restrictive measures, while expressing hopes for an open, fair, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies to invest in the US. The details of the TikTok deal, however, remain undisclosed by both parties.
President Trump announced the approval of the TikTok deal following the telephonic conversation with Xi Jinping. Despite the lack of publicly detailed documents outlining a specific formal 'TikTok deal' between the USA and China, the media report was sourced from ANI and Xinhua.
Xi Jinping emphasised the historical alliance between China and the United States, who fought side by side during World War II, and stressed the importance of the relationship between the two nations. He also stated that relations between China and the United States can achieve mutual success, prosperity, and benefits for both nations and the world.
The Chinese President also highlighted the need for solutions reached through commercial negotiations in China to comply with Chinese laws and regulations and balance interests. China, he asserted, has a clear position that it respects the wishes of companies and encourages commercial negotiations based on market rules.
The US President, in turn, emphasised the importance of the US-China relationship as the most significant bilateral relationship in the world. He also underscored the need for both nations to avoid unilateral actions that could escalate tensions.
President Trump also agreed to visit China in the early part of next year, and President Xi Jinping agreed to come to the United States at an appropriate time. The US-China conversation regarding the TikTok deal was led by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and top trade negotiator Li Chenggang.
The US President described China's military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the war of resistance as truly spectacular. The conversation between the two leaders marked a positive step towards resolving ongoing issues and fostering a more harmonious relationship between the world's two largest economies.
