Iran Demands an End to Israeli Attacks for Possible U.S. Talks
United States and Iran urged to halt hostilities for diplomatic talks
In a bold move, Iran has made the halt of Israeli attacks a prerequisite for any potential talks with the United States. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi, speaking on state television, stated that while the Americans have proposed serious negotiations, Iran has made it crystal clear that diplomacy and dialogue are off the table until the aggression stops.
Araghtchi is scheduled to have talks later today with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and diplomats from Britain, France, and more in Geneva. The focus of these discussions will reportedly revolve around finding a diplomatic solution for Iran's nuclear program. Additionally, European negotiating circles expect the meeting to address the possibility of a diplomatic initiative from Tehran.
Wadephul, before the meeting, emphasized his high expectations for Tehran's next move regarding the diplomatic front. However, he assured Israel that Germany will consistently monitor and safeguard the security and existence of the Israeli state, a priority as part of Germany's raison d'être.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Trump hinted at the possibility of military intervention in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. He revealed that he would decide within the next two weeks on whether to authorize a military strike, given the progress being made in negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program. Trump believes there's a "significant chance" of negotiations with Iran, though this remains uncertain.
Israel began its large-scale attack on Iran on June 13 with the goal of hindering Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Since then, the Israeli military has been bombing military and nuclear facilities in Iran. In response, Iran has been launching rockets towards Israeli sites. Critics have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, although Tehran denies these claims. Since the U.S.'s withdrawal from the 2015 international nuclear accord in 2018, Iran has increased uranium enrichment.
