Iran finds itself once again at the centre of international scrutiny, as the United Nations Security Council prepares to vote on reimposing sanctions on its nuclear program. The move, led by Britain, France, and Germany, comes after years of escalating tensions and broken promises.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a treaty aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, has been significantly affected since the United States reimposed sanctions on Iran during Donald Trump's first presidency in 2018. This action, followed by Iran's gradual withdrawal from its commitments under the agreement, has raised concerns among Western powers and Israel.

These countries have accused Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, a claim that Iran denies. They allege that Iran has broken its promises under the 2015 treaty, specifically by building up a uranium stock more than 40 times the level permitted under the deal, as stated in a letter to the UN in mid-August by the 'European Three'.

Iran, however, does not share the view of European powers regarding the triggering of the snapback clause. The snapback mechanism, as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, allows for the reimposition of previous sanctions if the Security Council determines that Iran is not fulfilling its commitments.

If the resolution is upheld, it is expected that the nine positive votes needed to maintain the status quo will not be achieved, implying that sanctions will be reimposed. Diplomatic sources anticipate that this could lead to international sanctions being reinstated against Iran by the end of the month, as predicted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The war between Iran and Israel has also added to the tension. Tensions have been high between the two countries since the 12-day war between them in June. The war derailed nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States and prompted Iran to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). IAEA inspectors left Iran shortly after the suspension of cooperation.

The vote is a significant development in the ongoing saga between Iran and the international community. The UN Security Council will vote on Friday to reimpose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, under the presidency of the UN's rotating presidency. The outcome of the vote could have far-reaching implications for the future of Iran's nuclear program and its relations with the international community.
