United Nations Security Council to cast decision on Iran nuclear embargo on coming Friday

In a significant development, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom (collectively known as the 'E3') have accused Iran of breaching several commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a treaty aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The E3's accusation, made in a mid-August letter to the United Nations, alleges that Iran has exceeded JCPOA limits on enriched uranium, heavy water, and centrifuge usage, and has restricted the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) monitoring capabilities, violating its JCPOA obligations.

The JCPOA, signed in 2015, was left in disarray following the United States' withdrawal in 2018 during Donald Trump's presidency, which was followed by the reimposition of sanctions. Since then, Iran's nuclear activities have been stepped up, and it has gradually broken its commitments under the agreement.

The derailment of Iran's nuclear negotiations with the United States, caused by the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June, has further intensified the situation. Tensions between the two nations have remained high since the conflict, contributing to the current standoff.

In response to the E3's allegations, Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA, leading to the departure of IAEA inspectors from the country. If the resolution, expected to be discussed at a UN Council meeting scheduled for Friday at 10 am (1400 GMT), fails to maintain the status quo, where sanctions remain lifted, the measures will be reimposed.

The upcoming meeting at the UN Council's rotating presidency could mark a critical turning point in the ongoing conflict, as the international community grapples with the implications of Iran's alleged breach of the JCPOA. The resolution's outcome will likely have far-reaching consequences for global nuclear non-proliferation efforts and regional stability.
