United Nations Security Council resolution to halt combat operations in Gaza rejected by the United States
The United States has vetoed a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The veto, cast by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, underscores the continued diplomatic protection that the U.S. provides for Israel at the international body.
The resolution, if adopted, would have been a binding international call for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas. However, the veto by the United States prevented the 15-member Security Council from adopting the resolution.
The U.S., as a permanent member of the Security Council, holds veto power, enabling it to block resolutions despite support from other council members. The U.S. envoy to the UN, Morgan Ortagus, stated that Hamas should release every single hostage and surrender immediately before any diplomatic resolution could be considered.
The failure of the resolution leaves the international community without a unified Security Council position on ending the current Gaza conflict. The Security Council remains divided on a response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Despite the veto, the U.S. continues to work with its partners to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza. However, the U.S.'s stance on the resolution indicates ongoing support for Israel in the ongoing conflict.
Elsewhere, 'Türkiye' became the first country to contribute to the UNESCO Gaza aid fund, and a 'Together for Palestine' concert in London raised $2M for Gaza relief. The culture sector also contributes to fundraising efforts for Gaza relief.
The U.S.'s veto continues a pattern of using its permanent Security Council membership to shield Israel from multilateral diplomatic pressure. The failure of the resolution underscores the need for alternative diplomatic efforts to resolve the Gaza crisis. The ongoing conflict in Gaza remains a pressing issue, with no clear resolution in sight.
