Sunday saw the horrifying incident at the U.S.-founded GHF foundation's distribution center in Rafah. The Islamist organization Hamas alleged that Israeli forces were responsible for the deaths and injuries, a claim vehemently denied by both Israel and GHF. Guterres voiced his dismay over the reports, advocating that Palestinians should never have to risk their lives for food.
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced Guterres' statement as a disgrace, adding to the escalating political tensions. Spokesman Mahmud Bassal of Hamas' Civil Defense in Gaza told AFP that Israeli soldiers intentionally fired at thousands of civilians.
