Speech by Baerbock at United Nations' 80th Anniversary: Union's Role Remains Crucial in Modern Times - United Nations' Relevance: Eighty Years On, Crucial Role Undiminished

Annalena Baerbock, the vocal German politician hailing from the Green Party, has set her sights on the UN's top seat. As Foreign Minister, she's no stranger to global dynamics. Now, as a contender for the presidency of the General Assembly, she aims to brew a fresh brew for this 80-year-old institution.

The UN, she admits, is floundering under a double whammy of financial and political pressure. Yet, she's not one to despair. Instead, she regards this as an opportunity for reform, not a point of no return.

Baerbock envisions a more efficient, transparent UN, where all voices - from every corner of the globe - echo through its chambers. Content-wise, she envision kin a beefed-up role for the General Assembly in peacekeeping efforts.

But it's not just about business as usual. Baerbock advocates for more dialogue with civil society, particularly the youth. In her view, the UN needs to break down the walls and engage with the people, countering the rising tide of polarization in the public sphere.

The search for a successor to current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is a hot topic. Baerbock isn't afraid to tackle it head-on. Her aim? A transparent, inclusive process that ensures all member states have a say in the choice of the next leader. Guterres' second term ends in 2026.

Baerbock's nomination has garnered support from Western European countries and other nations. Originally, Germany had put forward German top diplomat Helga Schmid, but Baerbock is the sole candidate at the moment. The election is scheduled for June 2 in New York, with Baerbock's term commencing in September and lasting a year. Every one of the UN's 193 member states will be represented in the General Assembly.
