"Demanding Answers": UN Chief Urges Transparency over Deaths at Gaza Aid Center
United Nations Leader Seeks Explanation Regarding Fatalities at Aid Distribution Site in Gaza
Following Sunday's tragedy where civilians were killed at an aid distribution center in Gaza Strip, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate and impartial probe into the events. "I demand a swift, impartial investigation into these tragic events, with those responsible being brought to justice," Guterres declared. According to the militant Islamic group Hamas, over 30 people lost their lives and 176 others were injured at a relief center affiliated with the US-based charity GHF in Rafah, after reported gunfire from the Israeli army. Both Israel and GHF have refuted these allegations.
Guterres expressed his deep concern over the situation. "It's unjust for Palestinians to risk their lives for food," he added.
Mahmud Bassal, the spokesperson for Hamas' Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip, spoke with news agency AFP about targeted gunfire incidences by Israeli soldiers at "thousands of civilians."
The US-led humanitarian organization GHF characterized these allegations as "misinformation," while the Israeli army stated that their preliminary investigation suggest the military did not discharge bullets towards civilians near the premises.
Medical staff at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis admitted several patients suffering from gunshot wounds, as reported by Médecins Sans Frontières on Monday. Emergency coordinator Claire Manera criticized the situation, saying these civilian casualties and injuries were preventable and raised concerns about the safety of the US-based charity GHF's new aid system being "inhumane, hazardous, and highly ineffective."
Meanwhile, the Israeli military's operations continued, resulting in at least 14 deaths and 20 individuals still missing after an attack on a residential building in Jabalia's city in northern Gaza Strip on Monday.
The two-month-long ceasefire concluded in March, since then Israel has escalated its military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to dismantle their power. On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that he has ordered the military to charge ahead, regardless of any ongoing negotiations in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas initiated its major offensive on Israel on October 7, 2023, triggering the Gaza war. Since then, Israel has been carrying out large-scale military campaigns in the Palestinian territory. According to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, at least 54,400 Palestinians have perished, although these figures cannot be independently verified.
