South Korean President to Chair UN Security Council Debate on AI and International Peace

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to make a significant mark at the United Nations (UN) this September, as he is scheduled to address the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday and chair an open debate in the 15-member UN Security Council on September 24.

The debate, which will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on international peace and security, will be the first time a South Korean leader chairs such a meeting. This historic event underscores South Korea's growing role in global affairs.

President Lee's speech at the UNGA on September 29 will delve into South Korea's path to overcome its crisis of democracy, following the illegal declaration of martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December. The speech is expected to provide insights into South Korea's vision and strategies to navigate through this challenging period.

In addition to his official engagements, President Lee is expected to hold numerous meetings with leaders of UN member states on the sidelines of the event. The number of meetings to be arranged has not been confirmed by his office.

Meanwhile, the Assembly will also focus on the situation in Gaza, following Israel's recent ground offensive. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the conflict, stating the killing of civilians is 'morally, politically, and legally intolerable.'

Other notable speakers at the UNGA include Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who will open the general debate on Tuesday, followed by US President Donald Trump. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to address the Assembly on September 25, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak on September 26.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will also address the Assembly on September 26. The representation of North Korea at the UNGA on September 29 is another focus of the Assembly, but no information has been provided about who will represent North Korea in the speech.

President Lee has expressed anticipation for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to New York. He has also planned meetings with leaders from France and Poland at the sidelines of the UNGA to discuss international affairs. However, details about other specific leaders or countries he will meet have not been provided in the available information.

This promises to be an eventful and significant gathering of world leaders, as they discuss pressing global issues and chart a course for a more peaceful and secure future.
