United Nations dismisses proposed independent aid distribution strategy in Gaza
In a bold statement, Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, has spoken out about the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Here's the lowdown:
"Let's get moving," Fletcher declared, advocating for a more effective means of distributing aid. This plan, he said, boasts the backing of a coalition of donors and the majority of the international community. It's ready to roll, right now, if only they're given the green light. Fletcher characterizes this plan as a neutral, independent endeavor.
Fletcher recalls that the UN has a wealth of assets at its disposal - personnel, distribution networks, community trust, and 160,000 pallets of humanitarian aid ready to be delivered. The support of the global community is also behind them. "Been there, done that," Fletcher asserted, expressing confidence in the UN's ability to reach those in dire need and avert famine, all while upholding dignity and acting swiftly.
"Enough is enough," Fletcher reiterated, demanding a swift, secure, and unhindered distribution of aid to civilians in need. The UN's demand comes in the wake of a US-based organization, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, announcing plans to initiate operations in Gaza to distribute aid. This controversial move, supported by Israel, could potentially give Israel control over the distribution of aid in the Gaza Strip.
Since the offensive in Gaza in October 2023, Israel has sporadically allowed humanitarian aid – food, fuel, and medicine – into the enclave, home to around 2 million Palestinians. However, in a concerning turn, aid has been blocked since March 2, placing over half a million people at risks of starvation.
Unfortunately, despite the UN's efforts and the initiatives of other humanitarian organizations, the ongoing conflict and Israeli restrictions continue to pose significant challenges to the distribution of aid in Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has been stretched thin, with their food and flour supplies depleted since early March 2025 due to the lack of new supplies entering Gaza. Basic humanitarian supplies such as medical aid, food, fuel, and vaccines for children are rapidly dwindling, with one-third of essential medical supplies already out of stock.
The Israeli authorities have imposed a siege on Gaza since March 2, 2025, preventing humanitarian aid from entering the territory. The UN continues to lobby for the resumption of aid deliveries in order to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations in Gaza.

In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Tom Fletcher, the UN's Under-Secretary-General, has called for a neutral, independent endeavor to distribute aid more effectively, backed by a coalition of donors and the international community. He emphasizes that the UN, with its resources, can swiftly avert famine while upholding dignity, but the ongoing conflict and Israeli restrictions pose significant challenges. Moreover, political tensions escalate as Israel supports a US-based organization's planned operations in Gaza, raising concerns about potential control over aid distribution.
