The United Nations General Assembly, the largest body of the United Nations, will host a debate next week, during which Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will deliver a virtual speech. This exception was granted following the denial of a visa for Abbas to attend in person by the Trump administration.

Typically, personal appearances are limited to the General Debate, where nearly 150 heads of state and government are present. However, due to the current circumstances, the UN General Assembly has made exceptions for virtual speeches.

Abbas' speeches at the UN General Assembly's debate, scheduled for Thursday, and a conference on the two-state solution, scheduled for Monday, will mark his virtual presence. The conference on the two-state solution aims to propose a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict involving two independent states.

The decision by the USA not to issue visas for Abbas and dozens of other representatives of the Palestinian Authority (PA) contrasts with the support shown by 145 of the 193 countries in the UN General Assembly for Abbas' virtual speech. Notably, Germany was among the countries supporting this resolution.

The USA's stance towards the Palestinian representatives stands in contrast with its support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. The Trump administration has made it clear that it stands firmly with Israel.

This decision by the USA to revoke visas for the Palestinian representatives goes against a contract with the United Nations. According to this contract, the USA must issue visas for all representatives of countries who wish to travel to the UN headquarters in Manhattan. The USA will not issue new visas for the Palestinian representatives.

The USA's decision may have diplomatic implications, as it goes against the UN General Assembly's resolution enabling Abbas' speeches. This decision does not apply to Abbas' scheduled virtual speeches at the UN General Assembly's debate and the conference on the two-state solution.
