United Nations Assembly Focuses on Gaza and the Future of Palestine

The United Nations General Assembly is currently underway, with world leaders gathering to discuss and address pressing global issues. Among the topics on the agenda are the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the future of the Israeli-Palestinian two-state solution, Iran's nuclear program, and climate change.

Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to attend the meeting, marking his return nearly a year after his forces overthrew Bashar al-Assad. The crisis in the Gaza Strip, caused by the Israeli offensive two years ago, will be a main topic of debate. International Crisis Group analyst Richard Gowan believes that recognition of a Palestinian state could have real significance if followed by pressure on Israel to end its campaign in Gaza. However, Gowan also warns of possible Israeli reprisals and a risk of escalation by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a significant move, France is expected to formally recognize a Palestinian state at the meeting. This recognition, however, has been met with opposition from the United States, Israel's main ally, which has vowed to deny visas to the Palestinian delegation. Mahmud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has been denied a US visa to attend the gathering. Despite this, Abbas will speak at the gathering via video link after the Assembly votes to authorize this.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not the only issue of concern. The future of the Israeli-Palestinian two-state solution will be discussed in meetings co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. The General Assembly has also adopted a text supporting a future Palestinian state, without Hamas.

Another contentious issue on the agenda is Iran's nuclear program. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend the meeting, and the topic is likely to be a point of discussion, as sanctions against Tehran could be reinstated at the end of September.

In addition to these political issues, a climate summit is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, organized by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil. Some states may announce new goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the summit. Guterres has called for action on Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and climate change, and people are demanding answers and action from the UN, according to Federico Borello, Interim Executive Director at Human Rights Watch.

Portugal, Belgium, and the United Kingdom are announced to recognize the Palestinian state formally at the UN General Assembly session on Friday. The meeting is taking place while the UN is under an existential threat, according to Borello. With leaders from around the world convening, the General Assembly offers a platform for dialogue and action on these critical global issues.
