United Nations Address by Venezuela: Decry Years of Israeli Settlements, Call for American Accountability for Palestine Injustice

Venezuela reaffirmed its strong support for Palestinian self-determination at the International High-Level Conference on the Question of Palestine held on July 31, 2025, at UN Headquarters in New York. The conference, which brought together diplomats, UN officials, and civil society representatives, aimed to reaffirm the global commitment to a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue.

In a joint statement, 12 country participants, including Venezuela, established coordinated diplomatic, legal, and economic measures to pressure Israel. The measures include a stop to arms transfers, a review of public contracts that might legitimize the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and demands to end US vetoes shielding Israel at the UN Security Council and the cessation of arms transfers to Israel.

Venezuela's President Maduro, speaking on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza and called on the U.S. to end its complicity. Maduro urged a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the launch of a major reconstruction plan in coordination with Palestinian authorities. He also proposed a global summit aimed at stopping the massacre and forcing Israel to comply with international law, calling for peace driven by popular will rather than elites profiting from war.

Other nations share these views. The Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister called for a recognition of Palestine, while several Latin American and Caribbean countries, including Brazil, recognize the State of Palestine. France and Canada have announced their intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly.

The conference also saw the endorsement of the South Africa-led genocide case against Tel Aviv at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by the Nicolás Maduro government. Bolivia strongly condemned Israeli actions and called for accountability for those financing the violence. The Elders and figures like Juan Manuel Santos emphasized Palestinian self-determination as key to lasting peace and condemned Israeli government policies that seek to prevent Palestinian statehood through actions in Gaza and settlements.

The CARICOM called urgently for accountability for Israeli violations, describing Gaza as a "land of walking corpses." The Emergency Conference of The Hague Group in Bogotá agreed on immediate measures to halt the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Several speakers at the conference stressed the urgent need to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to address the crisis.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the conference, stating that the situation in Palestine is "at a breaking point" and that a two-state solution is "farther than ever before." Guterres called on parties to not defer peace efforts and to act before it is too late. The United States and Israel boycotted the proceedings of the conference.

In summary, the conference marked a significant step in the international community's efforts to address the crisis in Palestine. Venezuela and several other countries advocate for Palestine’s recognition as a UN member state, call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and demand accountability for alleged war crimes and violations of international law, while criticizing international actors such as the U.S. for enabling impunity. The international community's unified voice underscores the urgent need for action to bring peace and justice to the people of Palestine.

  1. Amidst the ongoing crisis in Palestine, nations, including Venezuela, are rallying to enact diplomatic, legal, and economic measures against Israel, with a focus on ending arms transfers, reviewing public contracts, and demanding the cessation of US vetoes in the UN Security Council.
  2. In the face of war-and-conflicts in Palestine, countries such as France and Canada have expressed their intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine, joining Latin American and Caribbean nations like Brazil, who have already recognized Palestine, calling for an end to the violence and a pursuit of peace through popular will.
