United Kingdom Urges France to Intensify Action Against Small-Scale Migrant Vessels

** Title: Smugglers Exploit French Law, UK Pressures France for Change in Migrant Crossings

Opposition politicians in the UK claim that criminal gangs are taking advantage of a French law, which prevents police from acting once migrants are in the water during small boat crossings. The UK Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has urged France to modify their policing tactics in this matter.

In the House of Commons, Cooper discussed the over 1,100 migrants who reached the UK on a single day, the highest number this year. Cooper has faced criticism from opponents who say that smugglers are exploiting a loophole in French law that forbids intervention by authorities once migrants are afloat.

Conservative MP Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, pointed out that the prevention rate by French authorities on land is only 40%. He also claimed that the French are not stopping boats at sea, unlike the Belgians. Cooper stated that the UK government has encouraged French authorities to allow intervention when migrants are in shallow waters.

The French interior minister and cabinet have agreed that their rules need to change. A maritime review is underway, looking at new operational tactics. The UK is pushing France to speed up the review's completion and implement the changes as quickly as possible. Cooper confirmed that she is in communication with her French counterpart, and further discussions are ongoing this week.

In February, France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau proposed amending the law to allow police intervention up to 300 meters from the coastline. However, this proposal has met resistance from unions, arguing that intercepting overcrowded dinghies would be too dangerous.

Several challenges lie ahead in addressing this issue, as both countries work together to combat migrant smuggling and ensure border security.

Additional Information

  • In recent disputes, Starmer blamed the lack of joint action for the surge in migrant arrivals in the UK via small boats.
  • The UK government plans to deny citizenship to migrants who arrive via dangerous routes.
  • A deal giving EU fishing vessels access to UK waters until 2038 may be suspended if France fails to address small boat arrivals at sea.
