United Kingdom supports Estonia amidst Russian fighter jets breaching airspace, prompting a NATO retaliation
In a worrying development, three Russian jets were reported to have violated Estonian airspace on Friday, marking the third such incident involving Russia news in less than a week. This incident comes 10 days after Russian drones entered Polish airspace and six days after another Russian drone was intercepted flying over Romania.
The Estonian foreign ministry confirmed the incident, with the EU high representative for foreign affairs, Kaja Kallas, describing it as an "extremely dangerous provocation" that "further escalates tension in the region". Kallas also warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "testing the West's resolve".
The name of the Russian Minister of Defence related to these events is Sergei Shoigu. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the aircraft's flight route lay over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, more than three kilometers from Vaindlo Island, and denied that the jets entered Estonian airspace, claiming their flights were "conducted in strict compliance with international airspace regulations".
The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, warned that his country was the closest to "open conflict" it had been since the Second World War. The UK has expressed support for Estonia following the incident, with the UK announcing it would provide Warsaw with extra air cover in the form of RAF jets. UK politician Yvette Cooper also expressed support for Estonia on social media following the incident.
In response to the violation, NATO scrambled fighter jets to intercept the Russian aircraft. However, no further details about the identity or type of the Russian jets were provided. The Russian Ministry of Defence, in a statement, said that the three jets were flying "from Karelia to an airfield in the Kaliningrad region".
The Estonian government summoned Russia's senior diplomat in Tallinn over the incident. The UK has not provided any new information about the incident over Romania. This escalation in tensions between Russia and its European neighbours is a cause for concern and underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among NATO allies.
