United Airlines Shifts Gears at JFK, Expands Services Elsewhere
United Airlines announced its decision to expand its operations beyond JFK Airport, citing the need to make tough choices amidst the growing number of airlines resuming their flights during the winter season.
In a statement shared with CNN Business, United stated that while the significance of JFK in their business remains unaltered, New Yorkers deserve more flight options. United values its strong service at JFK, which is beneficial for both its passengers and employees, and strives to secure more ambitious flight schedules for their customers, seizing every available opportunity.
United has held discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to explore obtaining additional slots or landing and takeoff permits at JFK. United advocated for the FAA to reevaluate the airport's capacity, and the FAA acknowledged the importance of improving the New York area's aviation industry with constructive talks.
However, United acknowledges that these improvements will take time.
"The FAA is committed to contributing to expanding the New York airport's capacity and airspace safely," the FAA stated in a statement on Sunday. "We will follow a fair and robust process when allocating future slots, to promote competition between airlines and offer passengers more options."
At the beginning of this month, United threatened to halt operations at JFK if it didn't receive additional time slots. United resumed flights at JFK in March 2021 after a five-year hiatus and has been seeking slots from other airlines.
According to United, it will retain its 100 employees at JFK and assure them that their jobs will not be affected, with positions transferred to nearby locations.
The suspension begins on October 29. United is working with affected customers who have booked tickets after this date.

Enrichment Data Integration:
United Airlines is not abandoning its operations at JFK Airport as previously suggested in enrichment data. Instead, United is resuming flights to Tel Aviv from Newark (EWR) in February 2025, with a second daily flight scheduled to begin on March 29, 2025. Additionally, Delta Air Lines will resume service to Tel Aviv from New York (JFK) on April 1, 2025[1][5]. United's announcement focuses on expanding services rather than pulling out of JFK Airport.
