Union's potential shift to minor partnership, as AfD garners 35% support
Title: "Guttenberg Contemplates Union-AfD Alliance Post-Election"
Karl-Theodor zu Gutenberg ponders a potential post-election alliance between the Union and AfD
In a candid chat with Spiegel, the enigmatic powerhouse, Karl-Theodor zu Gutenberg, drops a shocking revelation: He envisions a possible alliance between the Union parties and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) following the next federal election. "I ain't shuttin' it down," Gutenberg boldly stated, sending shockwaves through political circles.
According to Gutenberg's estimates, the AfD could snag an astounding 35% in the 2029 election, should they fail to tackle the herculean tasks before them within two years, creating a government that regains public trust. However, he expresses hope that the AfD won't reach such staggering heights.
"If that 35% happens, dude, coalition exclusion ain't off the table for the year 2029," Gutenberg outlined. "In doubt, we'd be the sidekicks." With the coming years looming, Gutenberg stresses, "The heat's on. These two years decide the game. I ain't got patience for longer than two years."
Current polls put the AfD neck-and-neck with the Union at 25%, with the SPD barely hanging on at 15%, followed by the Greens and the Left at 12% and 10%, respectively. The BSW and FDP rest at 3% each.
Gutenberg yearns for "Openness with the Population"
When prompted on reintroducing conscription, Gutenberg's answer was unequivocal: "Yep, if we're straight with the people on this one." According to Gutenberg, the government should've rethought its stance after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as early as 2014.
Despite conscription being shelved during his tenure as Defence Minister, Gutenberg defends his actions. "We just couldn't swing the conscription without breaking the bank," he clarified. "It was a tight-lipped announcement from the Chancellor and finance minister that sacrifices had to be made."
Looking back, Gutenberg admits he'd prefer to maintain conscription. "I'd've danced a jig if I had a 100-billion-euro special fund," he confesses.
