Union Ver.di in North Rhine-Westphalia persists in its opposition to increasing the maximum age for firefighters.
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, a contentious issue has arisen concerning the age limit for firefighting service personnel. This debate revolves around a proposed regulation that, if passed, would affect both municipal and state firefighters.
Initially, the interior ministry's draft aimed to increase the age limit to either 61 or 62 years, depending on the career group. However, a recent development has seen parliamentary groups abandon this plan, much to the relief of some parties.
Andrea Becker, the state sector leader of ver.di NRW, welcomed this change. She has been a vocal critic of the proposed increase, arguing that it would not alleviate the personnel shortage but rather worsen it. Becker contends that the health burden on firefighters is not being adequately addressed by the proposed age limit increase.
The Fachverband Feuerwehr (firefighters' association) in North Rhine-Westphalia also rejected the planned age limit of 61 years, stating that such a limit is not justified due to the valuable experience and continued capability of older firefighters.
In an expert hearing, ver.di presented health data showing that illness rates and sick leave increase significantly after the age of 55 among firefighters. Becker, in her criticism, said, "The fire does not burn slower, and the ladder does not become shorter at the end of one's career."
Hundreds of firefighters have participated in actions organized by trade unions in front of the state parliament, voicing their concerns about the proposed age limit increase. The CDU and Greens parliamentary groups in North Rhine-Westphalia have proposed a new regulation for the age limit of firefighting service personnel.
However, the final decision on the age limit regulation remains unresolved. As the debate continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of those who risk their lives daily to protect the community.
