📣 Union Needs a Makeover in These Positions for Winter Survival 📣

The mighty Union has hit rock bottom, sitting at the base of the Bundesliga table since last Sunday. But how did we get here? Let's dive into areas that need improvement.

Between the posts: With Frederik Rönnow (31) being the undisputed number one, a reliable backup has been hard to find. Rönnow has conceded six long-range goals this season, which is quite a leap from the mere one he let in during 34 matches in 2022/23. A powerful keeper is needed to support the team in the relegation battle. According to sources, Arijanet Muric from Burnley could be a loan option.

At the back: Our fortress, once an impenetrable shield for Union, does not exude the same security this season. With only a single clean sheet - against the fourth-division team Walldorf (4:0) - the defense has abandoned the ironclad fortitude that was their hallmark. Coach Urs Fischer (57) is scrambling for solutions. An all-rounder (a versatile central defender) might be the elixir, especially since Paul Jaeckel (25) and Leonardo Bonucci (36) are likely to follow contracts running out come summer.

In midfield: Union may be overflowing with talent in this area, but the sheer volume has not guaranteed quality. The attackers have been left wanting for ideas. Neither Janik Haberer (29) nor Brenden Aaronson (23) have shown enough to be the solution to the team's woes. Could a classic playmaker be the difference-maker?

Upfront: Union's new acquisitions - Kevin Volland (31/Monaco), Mikkel Kaufmann (22/KSC) and Benedict Hollerbach (22/Wehen Wiesbaden) - have not delivered as expected. Kevin Behrens (32) has been inconsistent, while Sheraldo Becker (28, courted by Frankfurt) has shown better form. David Fofana (20/Chelsea) has yet to prove his potential beyond a fledgling capacity. The most pressing need for action is up front!

Bottomline: Union needs a band-aid urgently, especially upfront and in midfield. A defender could provide valuable assistance, too. With the threat of relegation looming, manager Oliver Ruhnert (51) has his work cut out for him!

Note: Union Berlin is currently battling in 13th position with 24 points from 21 matches. The team has recorded 6 wins, 6 draws, and 9 losses, scoring 20 goals and conceding 27. Union Berlin should prioritize strengthening their defense and midfield to bolster their chances of avoiding relegation. Adding a strong goalkeeper, an all-rounder (defender and central midfielder), and a classic playmaker might be just what the doctor ordered!
