Collaboration with the Union? Reichinnek Embraces Dialogue with CDU and CSU
Union-friendly stance left open by Reichinnek
Heidi Reichinnek, chairwoman of the Left faction in the German Bundestag, exudes a cooperative spirit when it comes to interacting with the Union. Speaking with the German Editorial Network (RND), Reichinnek shares her views: "On the day of the chancellor's election, we sat in a room with the CDU, and no one burst into flames. We have little in common with the Union, but we remain in conversation with all democrats to achieve something for the people."
This surprisingly open stance from the Left leader has sparked discussions about potential cooperation, especially concerning the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt state elections. Could the CDU and CSU consider a partnership with the Left to keep the AfD out of power? Reichinnek conveys her readiness to explore unexpected avenues: "I am personally ready for almost anything before my home is thrown to the AfD."
Despite historical reservations against the far-right AfD, many discover common democratic grounds with the Left. Reichinnek urges the Union to reconsider their incompatibility resolution regarding cooperation with the Left. She asserts, "For that, it only takes a fundamental democratic compass. The Left wants to make democracy more socially just, the AfD wants to abolish it."
Politics: Advocating for a Progressive Alliance
In light of the need to create progressive majorities, Reichinnek calls for a unified strategy between the Left, Greens, and SPD. "We have to develop more support for our positions in society as a whole. Unfortunately, we're currently taking voters away from each other. But we have to achieve greater success as a coalition," states the Left politician.
With the Left overtaking the Greens in recent polls, Reichinnek encourages intra-party collaboration. "It doesn't help if the Greens and us push five percent of voters back and forth. Instead, we have to ask: Which milieus do the Greens reach? Which do we reach? And what can we achieve together?"
Reichinnek voices her concerns about the SPD, asserting, "I don't see anything in the black-red coalition agreement that the SPD once stood for." She expresses her hope that the SPD will return to its roots in the upcoming years.
