In a massive shift in the Union Faction's leadership, former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has been elected as the new chairman, succeeding Friedrich Merz with an overwhelming 90.35% of the votes. The election took place within the Union Faction, with 178 members of parliament casting their votes in favor, 17 voting against, and 2 abstaining.

The new First Parliamentary Manager is Steffen Bilger, who replaces Thorsten Frei, and will act as the former vice-chairman. Bilger garnered 93.5% of the votes, according to Union calculations.

Long-Time Bundestag Member and Government Veteran

Spahn has been a member of the Bundestag for over 20 years, and his extensive experience in government shines through his various roles. After the CDU's lost election in 2021, he was one of the deputy faction chairmen during the opposition phase. He was particularly engaged in economic policy and has government experience as the parliamentary state secretary for finance and during the COVID-19 pandemic as the Minister of Health.

Despite criticism during the Corona Pandemic over issues such as the purchase of allegedly overpriced protective masks, Spahn's tenure in the government positions showcases his dedication to public service.

Merz, who received 98% in his first election as faction chairman in February 2022, will be elected as Federal Chancellor in the Bundestag on this Tuesday.
