Union DC 37 establishes a Political Action Committee to bolster the mayoral candidacy of Adrienne Adams
New York City Mayoral Race: District Council 37 Backs Speaker Adrienne Adams
In a significant development for the New York City mayoral race, Speaker Adrienne Adams' campaign has qualified for public matching funds, allowing her to air her first television advertisement. However, despite eclipsing several candidates who have been in the race longer, Adams has yet to become a front-runner.
The union District Council 37 is playing a prominent role in Adams' campaign, with plans to invest a substantial amount, estimated to be in the "high six figures," to support her bid. This marks the first time District Council 37 is working with the consulting firm Red Horse Strategies on a mayoral campaign, following their work with Adams' predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams, in 2021.
Red Horse Strategies, known for their role in Eric Adams' successful campaign, is once again working with District Council 37. The firm has been paid nearly $300,000 by the new committee from DC 37. However, it's important to note that, as of the latest available information, Red Horse Strategies does not appear to play a public role in the 2025 campaign of Adrienne Adams, beyond their work with Eric Adams in 2021.
District Council 37 announced their endorsement of Speaker Adams alongside Attorney General Letitia James in April. They also announced endorsements for Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani and state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, but only Speaker Adams was featured at the press conference.
Adams, a late entrant in the race, has been making waves, but her campaign declined to comment on the outside spending in the mayoral race. The primary beneficiary of outside spending so far has been former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with the super PAC Fix the City, boosting his campaign and opposing Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani's campaign, raising more than $10 million.
In a late May Emerson College poll, Speaker Adams won roughly 8% of Democratic respondents' votes in the first round of a ranked-choice voting simulation, putting her in fifth place. Despite this, her campaign's first television ad is a promising step towards gaining more visibility and support in the race.
As the New York City mayoral race heats up, it will be interesting to see how Speaker Adams' campaign progresses, with the support of District Council 37 and Red Horse Strategies. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
