End of an Era: Oliver Ruhnert Leaves Union - Union Berlin’s architect Oliver Ruhnert exits after shaping club’s historic rise

Oliver Ruhnert, a key figure in Union Berlin's rise, is leaving the club after a mutual agreement. Ruhnert, who served as chief scout and previously as sporting director, played a pivotal role in shaping the club's identity and achieving remarkable success.

Ruhnert's journey with Union Berlin began in 2018. Alongside Dirk Zingler and Urs Fischer, he helped forge the club's identity. His leadership led to significant achievements, including promotion to the Bundesliga and three consecutive European campaigns. Notably, under his tenure, Union Berlin reached the Champions League for the first time in the 2023/24 season.

Ruhnert's impact was so profound that Union Berlin president Dirk Zingler praised his dedication and contributions. However, Ruhnert's involvement in politics led to a leave of absence. He candidated for the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party in the 2025 federal election campaign. Although the BSW narrowly missed entering the Bundestag, Ruhnert returned to work alongside his successor, Horst Heldt, albeit staying out of the public eye.

Oliver Ruhnert's departure from Union Berlin marks the end of an era. His influence on the club's development and success is undeniable. As he steps away, Union Berlin looks to build on the foundation he helped establish, while Ruhnert pursues new challenges.
