German-Born Ghanaian Defender Derrick Köhn Joins 1. FC Union Berlin
Derrick Köhn, a 26-year-old left-back, has completed his move to 1. FC Union Berlin from Galatasaray Istanbul. The transfer fee for the defender is four million euros, with a conditional bonus of 500,000 euros.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Köhn began his professional career at Willem II Tilburg in the Netherlands. He later played for Hannover 96 before joining Galatasaray in February 2024.
In the 2024/25 season, Köhn was loaned out to Werder Bremen, where he made 30 appearances, including 27 in the Bundesliga, and scored 2 goals. His impressive performances at Bremen attracted interest from several Bundesliga clubs, with Union Berlin ultimately securing his signature permanently.
Horst Heldt, sporting director of FC Union Berlin, commented on the signing, stating that Köhn's flexibility and offensive drive open up additional options for the team on the left side.
Galatasaray will receive a share of any future transfer fees for Köhn. Before his move to Union Berlin, Köhn was under contract with Galatasaray until 2026.
Köhn began his footballing journey in the youth academies of HSV and FC Bayern Munich. He has also played 27 games and scored 2 goals for Werder Bremen and a total of 53 games and scored 8 goals for Galatasaray Istanbul.
The announcement was made by FC Union Berlin, although no details about the transfer modalities or contract durations were provided. With this move, Köhn returns to the Bundesliga on a permanent deal after proving himself during his loan spell in Germany's top flight.
