Union Berlin extends contract with coach Baumgart - Union Berlin secures Steffen Baumgart’s future with contract extension amid Bundesliga revival

Union Berlin has extended head coach Steffen Baumgart’s contract after a strong turnaround in form. The club sits comfortably in mid-table as the first half of the Bundesliga season nears its end. Two key matches remain before the winter break: a Thursday clash with FC Augsburg and a Sunday fixture against VfB Stuttgart.

Baumgart took over nearly a year ago, replacing two previous managers since Urs Fischer’s departure. Fischer had guided Union Berlin to Bundesliga promotion in 2019 and a historic Champions League run. Under Baumgart, the team stabilised after a rocky period and secured top-flight survival last season.

The former Union Berlin player, who featured for the club from 2002 to 2004, has since coached SC Paderborn, 1. FC Köln, and Hamburger SV. His leadership has brought a renewed sense of unity and resilience to the squad. Managing director Horst Heldt highlighted the team’s progress, praising their collective spirit and Baumgart’s ability to rebuild a solid foundation. Baumgart himself has spoken highly of the club’s unique character, respecting the players’ determination on the pitch. Though the exact length of his new deal remains undisclosed, the extension reflects confidence in his long-term vision.

With two matches left before the break, Union Berlin will look to maintain their mid-table position. The contract extension signals stability for the club as they prepare for the second half of the campaign. Baumgart’s experience and tactical approach will be key in the weeks ahead.
