Union Berlin's Midfield Makeover: Could Mahmoud Be the New Gunner?
Union Berlin is reportedly eyeing a new option in midfield, potentially leaving Kral's position uncertain.
Union Berlin's transfer spree isn't slowing down, and it seems the midfield is the next area to get a shake-up, despite the defense being well-equipped already.
Breaking Down the Gossip
According to Sky Sport Switzerland, Union Berlin is keeping a close eye on Mohamed Belhadj Mahmoud (25). Rumors have it that discussions with his agents have already taken place.
The 25-year-old Tunisian is currently under contract with FC Lugano and is said to be available for around €4–5 million. Last season, he played 42 competitive games for the Swiss team and gained valuable international experience.
Union Berlin's Midfield Horde
The right-footed Mahmoud could potentially inject some much-needed dynamism into the capital club's midfield, having netted ten times for Lugano last season.
However, Union Berlin will face fierce competition from France, as RC Lens is also said to be keen on Mahmoud. Given their French-speaking environment, Lens would likely hold an advantage in this contest.
This could potentially spell the end for Alex Kral (27), who is currently on loan at Union Berlin. If Mahmoud were to join, there might not be enough room for the Czech international in the squad.
With vice-captain Rani Khedira (31) having extended his contract just last May and homegrown talent Aljoscha Kemlein (20) set to return from injury in the summer, there's already a competitive midfield lineup in place.
More Drama Ahead?
Additionally, coach Steffen Baumgart (53) has players like Andras Schafer (26), Janik Haberer (31), and Lucas Tousart (28) at his disposal. However, it seems Tousart's days at the Old Forge could be numbered as well.

Union Berlin's potential acquisition of Mohamed Belhadj Mahmoud from FC Lugano could shake up the European leagues, especially as Union Berlin and RC Lens both seem interested in the 25-year-old. Meanwhile, Alex Kral's future at Union Berlin may be uncertain, as Mahmoud's arrival could potentially limit the Czech international's opportunities.
