Fans ignite Pyro: High fines for Union - Union Berlin fined €234,500 for fan pyrotechnics in four matches

Union Berlin has received a €234,500 fine for pyrotechnic displays by its supporters. The penalty follows four separate incidents of unsporting behaviour during matches. The club has accepted the decision, making the ruling final.

The German Football Association (DFB) imposed the fine after reviewing multiple cases of fan misconduct. These involved the illegal use of flares and fireworks inside stadiums. Such actions violate league regulations on safety and spectator behaviour.

Of the total penalty, €76,700 can be reinvested by Union Berlin. The club may use this portion for its own security upgrades or programmes aimed at preventing future violence. This option reflects the DFB's approach to encouraging proactive measures.

The decision was overseen by Alexander Wehrle, chairman of the DFB's supervisory board. His role includes handling disciplinary matters, including fines against clubs. Wehrle's position was confirmed in January 2026 when the DFB presidium reappointed him.

Union Berlin will now allocate part of the fine to improving security. The remaining amount must be paid as a penalty. The club's acceptance of the ruling means no further appeals will take place.
