Chatting with Heidi Reichinnek: Left, Union, and the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt

Union and Reichinnek left the door open for collaborative endeavors

Heidi Reichinnek, the Left faction leader in the Bundestag, has shown a willingness to cooperate with the Union, despite their differences. In an interview with the editorial network Germany (RND), Reichinnek acknowledged that while the Union and the Left have little in common, they still converse with all democrats to make a positive impact for the people.

Reichinnek entertained the idea of tolerating a CDU state government in Saxony-Anhalt to prevent an AfD government after the 2026 state election. She emphasized her readiness to do whatever it takes to keep her home from being handed over to the AfD.

Reichinnek invited the Union to reassess the incompatibility resolution concerning the Left. "The Left and the Democrats share many common goals, such as making democracy more socially just and keeping the AfD at bay. The Union can make this choice by simply aligning with democratic values," Reichinnek pointed out.

Unfortunately, the CDU did not view the Left's proposal favorably. "The Left is and remains the successor party to the SED, and it cannot be a partner for us, either in the federal government or in the state," CDU's Sepp Müller stated, referring to the party's historical ties to the GDR.

A Joint Strategy for Progressive Coalitions

The Left, Greens, and SPD must join forces to enable red-red-green coalition options, according to Reichinnek. She stressed the importance of embracing a joint strategy that enables progressive majorities over the next four years. Reichinnek called for discussions about voter outreach and shared milieus across parties to maximize support for progressive values.

This appeal has gained traction, with the Left overtaking the Greens in current polls for the first time. However, Reichinnek dismissed any notion of her party's success, instead advocating for focused collaboration between the Greens and Left to create lasting change.

Reichinnek critically appraised the current state of the SPD, expressing concerns about its direction under a possible Blackrock Chancellor Merz. She hoped that the SPD would return to its core values in the next four years.

In the context of the interview with Heidi Reichinnek, it's worthy to note that discussions about employment policy are essential, as both the Left and the Union share the common goal of making democracy more socially just. Additionally, community policy is significant in the negotiations for a progressive coalition, especially when considering the potential red-red-green options in upcoming state elections like those in Saxony-Anhalt. The goal is to prevent an AfD government and create lasting change, which requires a joint strategy and voter outreach across parties.
