Let's Ring in the New Year with a Change: Fireworks Ban Sqaunlored

Union Advocates for Sales Ban: Large Number of Individuals Favor Ban on Commercial Transactions

Berlin — Kickstarted by a shift in public opinion as revealed in recent polls, the Berlin Police Union (GdP) is ramping up efforts to ban fireworks during New Year's Eve at the Interior Ministers' Conference (IMC). As stated by Berlin GdP chairman Stephan Weh in an interview with the German Press Agency, the time for change is now. He says the poll, conducted from April 3rd to the 13th by the Berlin branch of the union, demonstrates that a new mindset is needed for New Year's Eve celebrations[1].

Politics must take action, Weh contends, due to the growing association of the once festive event with apprehension, insecurity, and frustration[1]. Intriguingly, 97% of the poll's 178,022 respondents expressed support for a ban on private fireworks[1]. Furthermore, 93% were in favor of a sales ban, and 95% of the participants pledged to adhere to a ban if implemented[1].

Instead, the overwhelming majority (91%) backed organized events with certified pyrotechnicians[1]. Strikingly, nearly half (49%) stated their intention to attend these events[1]. But what about those who prefer staying home? A disconcerting 70% admitted to foregoing venturing out onto the streets during New Year’s Eve[1].

While the poll saw a greater number of female participants (63%) compared to males (35%), all federal states were represented, with 85% of respondents aged 30 or older[1]. The Berlin GdP branch initiated a petition for a fireworks ban at the start of 2023, amassing over two million signatures[2].

The German Environmental Aid is also advocating for a ban[2]. The future of New Year's Eve festivities could be in the making as the IMC embarks on its discussions regarding this contentious issue at their upcoming meeting from June 11 to 13[1]. Stay tuned for updates from official German government sources and the IMC proceedings.

Politics and legislation are at the forefront as the Berlin Police Union advocates for a policy change, seeking a ban on fireworks during New Year's Eve celebrations at the Interior Ministers' Conference. General news and crime-and-justice sectors also play a role, with the majority of poll respondents voicing concerns over the growing association of the festive event with apprehension, insecurity, and frustration.
