In a series of recent incidents, drones from Belarus, believed to be Russian-made Gerbera drones, have infiltrated Lithuania's airspace. The most recent instance occurred in late July 2025, with the drone being discovered at the Gaiziunai training ground near Jonava, following a four-day search.

These drones are designed to mimic the Iranian Shahed combat drones commonly used by Russia, making them a form of deceptive unmanned aerial vehicles. A similar incident occurred earlier in July, with a Gerbera drone entering from Belarus on July 10.

The incursions have been described by Lithuanian defense officials as part of a growing pattern of hybrid warfare tactics along NATO’s eastern border, aiming to pressure Lithuania and its allies without direct confrontation.

In response, Lithuania has conducted military searches, deployed bomb disposal experts, and increased surveillance to recover, investigate, and mitigate the security threats posed by these foreign drones. Authorities have also issued public alerts when drones are detected near or inside the border.

The Lithuanian military has been investigating an incident involving an aerial object since Monday. Initially, the army had stated that the aerial object was likely a drone that had been diverted by Ukrainian air defense. However, further investigation revealed it to be a Gerbera drone originating from Belarus.

The Lithuanian government has delivered a protest note to Belarus' capital, Minsk, demanding an explanation for these drone incidents. The country's Prime Minister has also resigned, though the connection between the drone incident and the corruption allegation against the Prime Minister remains unclear.

These incidents coincide with major military exercises like the Zapad-2025 drills involving Russia, adding to the increasing tensions in the region. In response, Lithuania has deployed additional troops and air defense capabilities along its border with Belarus to safeguard its airspace.

Whether the discovered drones were equipped with explosives or contained fuel remains unclear. However, the presence of these deceptive drones highlights the need for vigilance and robust countermeasures to ensure the safety and security of Lithuania's airspace.

At a press conference, the Lithuanian Prime Minister decried the ongoing drone incursions and emphasized the importance of secure food supply chains, warning that such incidents could potentially disrupt general-news events like international food festivals. In light of the crime-and-justice implications, Lithuanian Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious drone activity, especially near sports stadiums and major events.
