Unforeseen outcome: By-election proven superfluous

In the small island of Sark, a by-election held yesterday was disrupted due to the withdrawal of a candidate, leaving only four candidates eligible for election to the Chief Pleas.

The by-election was scheduled to replace four Conseillers who had resigned from Chief Pleas, having been elected on different dates. Initially, there were six candidates for the four vacant seats. However, after the nomination window closed, one candidate withdrew their nomination for personal reasons, leaving five candidates.

Unfortunately, during the election, it was discovered that one of the remaining candidates was not registered on the electoral roll and had to withdraw their nomination. This unfortunate turn of events necessitated the by-election to be conducted again.

The Returning Officer for Sark, Paul Armorgie, expressed regret over the withdrawal of the two candidates in the by-election. He also stated that the administrative error that led to the ineligibility of a candidate was due to an oversight.

The new date for the by-election has yet to be announced. Once the election is concluded, the new Conseillers will determine their respective terms of office through lots, which will be drawn under the supervision of the Returning Officer on September 19th.

The cost of the by-election is currently unknown. The number of votes cast and voter turnout also cannot be determined as the election was not concluded.

Despite the disruption, the Oath of Allegiance for the new Conseillers will be sworn in the Seneschal's Court once they are elected. The four confirmed Conseillers Elect are Patrick Dewe, Samuel John Keyte, Nicolas John Patrick Moloney, and Karl Antony Rang.

The availability of search results does not contain information about which candidate was determined by the drawing of lots on Friday, September 19, to decide the length of their term in the Chief Pleas. The Returning Officer, Paul Armorgie, will supervise this process.

The by-election in Sark serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring all candidates meet the necessary eligibility criteria before participating in elections.
