Unforeseen incident at the stadium: Visually impaired pedestrians skillfully disarmed a potentially dangerous situation
In an extraordinary incident on September 12th, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) of the Arnsberg Regional Government successfully defused a 250 kg American bomb at the LVM Preußen Stadium in Münster.
The dramatic operation was captured by the Münster Fire Department, with a photograph of Patricia Heine and Peter Asmussen, the EOD team members who carried out the defusal, making headlines.
The photograph, now available for free publication, shows Heine and Asmussen diligently working to neutralize the World War II bomb. Their efforts resulted in the fire department giving the all-clear around 5:15 PM on the same day.
The bomb was discovered during excavation work in the eastern curve of the stadium. The discovery led to the evacuation of approximately 800 people from the immediate vicinity. However, with the successful defusal, the evacuation in the area of approximately 300 meters radius around the bomb has been lifted.
The operation attracted a significant response, with around 150 firefighters and aid organization personnel on site. Despite the high-stakes situation, five people sought support services provided at the city hall in Hiltrup.
The train lines that were closed during the defusal are now open again, and road closures in the vicinity of the stadium have been reopened as well. This marks the end of an eventful day in Münster, with the city returning to its normal rhythm.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that still exist from the remnants of past conflicts. The swift and successful response by the EOD team and the emergency services highlights the importance of their work in keeping our communities safe.
