Unexploded World War I munition safely detonated at Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's busiest airports, experienced an unexpected event last Tuesday night. A World War II-era bomb was discovered during construction work in the southern part of the airport grounds.
The bomb disposal operation was carried out by specialist bomb disposal teams from the police. The bomb, which was unearthed by construction workers on site, was successfully defused after midnight.
The defusal of the bomb did not disrupt any flight operations at the airport. However, a 500-meter safety perimeter was established around the bomb site, leading to the evacuation of a nearby hotel and a construction site.
The safety perimeter was in place following the defusal, but it was lifted later, allowing the evacuated hotel and construction site to resume operations.
Interestingly, the bomb defusal operation at Frankfurt Airport was completed before the night flight ban began. Frankfurt Airport has a night flight ban in place, but the bomb defusal operation did not interfere with this restriction.
The discovery and defusal of the bomb serve as a reminder of the historical legacy that still exists beneath the modern infrastructure of our cities. Frankfurt Airport, like many other cities, continues to uncover remnants of its past, offering a glimpse into the past while ensuring the safety of its present and future.
