In a chilling display of hate and intolerance, a group of suspected extremists from Saxony-Anhalt brutally attacked two supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) during the federal election campaign in Berlin. They are all facing charges of dangerous bodily harm and assaulting police officers, with several police officers sustaining injuries during the struggle.

The lawyer for the admitted guilty defendant stated that his client was "ready to use violence" and admitted to tearing off caps, pushing, punching, kicking, and verbally abusing his victims. He recognized the political nature of his targets, but at the time of the crime, he was "significantly intoxicated". In custody, he reflected on his actions and decided to "take a different political path, especially to renounce violence".
The attack took place in the Lichterfelde district, where the defendants reportedly encountered the SPD campaigners by chance. The victims were harassed and subsequently assaulted. The prosecution claims that the combat boots worn by one of the attackers were reinforced with nails in the sole.
Carolyn Macmillan, the SPD local politician affected by the attack, expressed her resilience, stating, "We will continue to show our flag." However, she acknowledged becoming more cautious following the incident. She emphasized the importance of continuing to support democratic parties, despite the rising threat of extremism.
The trial will resume on May 28, shedding more light on the deplorable actions of the defendants and the disturbing undercurrents of right-wing extremism that still exist in our society.
