Eugenia crashes the christening, gun in hand

The uncouth Eugenia was not welcome at the christening of Catalina's twins, but she shows up uninvited after the ceremony, brandishing Captain de la Mata's gun! Upon seeing her out of sorts, Don Lisandro starts reprimanding her, causing her to accidentally fire the gun. Adriano gets injured while trying to save the Duke's life, and it's not long before Andrés vanishes from his carriage. With all eyes on Andres' whereabouts, his cries are heard—but not everyone could fathom that he was on the palace tower, where Eugenia had taken him.

Eugenia climbs to the top of the castle with the child in her arms

Curro, who had just arrived searching for his mother, sprints upwards to attempt talking Eugenia down from the edge while everyone below begs her not to put the child's life in danger. "Don't do it. It's senseless," Curro pleads with her. "This is the only thing they can't take from me, my son," Eugenia replies, thinking the baby is hers.

Curro tells her that the child is Catalina's, and that he is her son: "Calm down, let's go back down and we'll see how everything gets sorted out." "Nothing in my life has made sense," Eugenia snarls back at Curro, upsetting Catalina further.

Eugenia's heart-wrenching speech

"Since I was a child, and my mother died, I felt like nothing belonged to me. Everything was like it was on loan, like it could be taken away at any moment. Nothing made sense. Not even my dreams," Eugenia begins to share her painful past in a speech that shocks everyone, especially her son Curro: "I dreamt of getting married, of starting a family. But my father had the bright idea of pairing me with Captain de la Mata. He never loved me, never. The only thing he wanted from me was a child. Imagine that, it seems I couldn't give him one because I couldn't get pregnant. Then, God performed a miracle and put that creature in my hands. It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, and I was happy. During my years of confinement, I found comfort in its memory."

Finally, Eugenia climbs up the tower wall, causing everyone to frantically worry about her and the child's safety. Her sister, the marchioness, begs her son not to say that she's not sane, since that was the only thing she had for a long time: "I remembered you, I took refuge in your memory, they had shown me happiness, but then they took it away from me, they locked me up in that horrible place. There, you weren't locked in a cell, you were imprisoned in your own place. And I will never go back," she says about the hell she lived through. Curro reminds her that she's not there anymore and that she won't go back. "I promise you," he says in a last attempt to convince his mother: "There, I was dead in life, without will, without freedom, without love, without anything."

"The only thing they can't take from me, my death"

Curro urges her to let go of the past. "And what do you think is going to happen after what I just did? They're going to lock me up in an asylum. They'll take me back there and this time for good. And once again, I'll stop being myself, and this time for the rest of my life, so what's the point of the rest of my life?" Eugenia counters. Her son begs her to think about him and what will become of him if she's not there, but for Eugenia, it's already too late: "That's what hurts me the most, but it doesn't matter anymore. If I don't do this, they'll take you away from me for the rest of your life. And me from you."

The woman climbs back onto the wall as the captain tries to go and prevent further harm, but both Manuel and the marquis stop him. Meanwhile, Eugenia looks out at the horizon: "This is the only thing they can't take from me, my death," she says, looking at a Curro who runs towards her but can't do anything because his mother has already jumped into the void with Andrés in her arms.

The child hasn't jumped with an Eugenia who is still alive, but just long enough to say goodbye to her son. A shocking death that has left everyone stunned, both the Luján family members and all the followers of La Promesa. A much-loved character who couldn't bear the abuse any longer.
