Unemployment Rises in Dortmund Amidst Seasonal Trends

Unemployment in Dortmund saw a significant rise in July 2025, with the number of unemployed individuals surpassing 40,000 for the first time in years. This increase aligns with broader trends in Germany, where unemployment remained stable at approximately 6.3% during that period [1].

Seasonal labor demand played a role in this development. July often witnesses higher demand in service industries and temporary jobs tied to tourism and construction, potentially reducing unemployment temporarily in cities like Dortmund [1]. However, the seasonal improvement in Dortmund appears to have been consistent with national trends, indicating a modest seasonal reduction in unemployment during this month.

Heike Bettermann, head of the Dortmund Employment Agency, expressed concern about the weak economic development and its impact on the local labor market. Despite the rise in unemployment, she emphasized the importance of "lifelong learning" as a key to navigating the job market [2].

In the wake of this increase, the Dortmund Jobcenter is focusing on tailor-made support offers and early support for young people to secure social participation and counteract the shortage of skilled workers [3]. The Employer Service received 1,092 new job postings in July, an increase from both June and the same month last year [3].

However, the total number of open positions in Dortmund remains below last year's level. By the end of July, 3,655 company-based training positions had been reported since the beginning of the reporting year, 82 fewer than the previous year [4]. This leaves 1,028 young people still searching for a training position [4].

Three out of four unemployed people in the care of the Dortmund Jobcenter do not have a completed vocational training [4]. As such, the Jobcenter is working to provide more opportunities for education and skill development to help individuals find employment and counteract the rising unemployment figures.

In terms of specific job sectors, employees in the fields of sales, logistics, postal and delivery services, and office and secretarial work are in high demand [5]. As the economy continues to evolve, it will be crucial for Dortmund to adapt and provide the necessary support to its workforce to ensure long-term economic success.

Youth work plays a crucial role in addressing the rising unemployment, particularly among the young population, in the wake of the increased unemployment numbers in Dortmund. In an effort to secure social participation and counteract the shortage of skilled workers, the Dortmund Jobcenter is focusing on tailor-made support offers and early assistance for the youth.

As the economy evolves and demand shifts, it is essential for Dortmund to adapt and provide the necessary education and skill development opportunities to its workforce, with sectors such as sales, logistics, postal and delivery services, and office and secretarial work being in high demand.
