Unemployment data official dismissed by Trump amid allegations of statistic manipulation for "political motives"

In a series of tweets on his platform, Truth Social, President Donald Trump accused Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), of manipulating unemployment statistics for political reasons. Trump claimed that important job numbers "can't be manipulated for political purposes," implying that the data had been rigged to make his administration look bad.

Following a July jobs report that showed significantly lower-than-expected job gains (73,000 jobs) and downward revisions to previous months' numbers, Trump directed his administration to fire McEntarfer, describing her as a "Biden Political Appointee" and stating she would be replaced with someone "much more competent and qualified."

However, these claims of manipulation have been broadly rejected by experts and former officials. For instance, William Beach, a former BLS commissioner appointed by Trump in 2017, called the charge "preposterous," stating that "there is no way for a commissioner to rig the jobs numbers." Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers also criticized the firing as extreme and unjustified, noting it surpasses previous controversies involving statistics under past administrations.

McEntarfer, a veteran labor economist confirmed by the Senate 86-8 last year, was fired by President Trump following the July 2025 jobs report. Her dismissal has sparked debates about the integrity of the BLS and the political influence on statistical data.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve, led by Jerome Powell, held its fifth meeting of the year this week. Despite Trump's pressures, the Fed left interest rates unchanged in their range of 4.25% to 4.5%. Trump called Jerome Powell "foolish" after announcing he won't lower interest rates, reiterating his criticism of the chairman. However, Trump has stated that Powell "very likely" will remain in his position.

As the economy continues to evolve, the roles of key figures like McEntarfer and Powell remain under scrutiny. The dismissal of McEntarfer and the ongoing tensions between Trump and the Federal Reserve serve as a reminder of the complex interplay between politics and economics in the United States.

Adriana Kugler, another member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, has also recently resigned, effective on August 8. In her resignation letter, Kugler stated that it has been the greatest honor of her life to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She will return to her position as a professor at Georgetown University in the fall.
