Unearthed World War I explosive triggers large-scale evacuation and intense operation in Berlin's city center.
In the heart of Berlin, an unexpected discovery was made on Thursday. A World War II bomb was found in the area of the Mühlendamm Bridge. The bomb, deemed potentially dangerous, has led to immediate evacuation measures and road closures in the affected area.
The cordoned-off zone includes the Spree Canal, Heinrich-Heine-Straße, the area south of the Museum Island ('Fischerinsel'), the residential area between the Spree and the Red City Hall, and the area between the Spree and the Spree Canal. All streets in this region are currently closed.
The authorities announced the evacuation shortly before midnight, and the process began late in the evening. All houses and buildings within the cordoned-off area are being evacuated. A temporary shelter has been established at the Mitte Town Hall, located at Karl-Marx-Allee 31, for those displaced by the evacuation.
The bomb disposal unit (Kampfmittelräumdienst) of the Berlin police is responsible for the defusing of the unexploded World War II landmine. They will conduct the investigation, defusing, and underwater examination, as well as the removal of the fuse.
A warning message was issued instructing people to leave the area, and the closure measures might last for several hours. The public is advised to avoid the affected area until further notice.
This discovery serves as a stark reminder of Berlin's rich and complex history, and the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of its residents and visitors. The authorities are working diligently to address this situation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
