In Berlin, residents of Spandau are being evacuated as authorities prepare to defuse a 100-kilogram World War II bomb discovered during construction work. The bomb was unearthed at the Mühlendamm sluice on the Fischerinsel.

Earlier this week, a similar discovery was made in Berlin-Mitte, where a bomb was found near the Mühlendammbrücke. Thankfully, that bomb was deemed not dangerous during inspection.

The discovery in Spandau necessitated the establishment of a restricted area, affecting around 12,400 people. This evacuation is one of the largest in Berlin's history, following similar incidents in Marzahn in July 2023 and Gesundbrunnen in December 2021.

Affected residents have been advised to seek shelter in a sports hall, while those unable to stay with relatives or friends have been provided temporary accommodation.

The Vivantes hospital group has announced that the clinic will not be evacuated, although the emergency room will be inaccessible during the defusal.

The bomb, which poses no immediate danger, will be removed from the Spree and disposed of properly. The defusal is planned for later today, with emergency services guarding the site around the clock.

Meanwhile, in Berlin-Mitte, people can return to their homes, although traffic disruptions may still occur. The restricted area around the discovery site has been lifted. Notable buildings within the original restricted area include a hospital, a care facility, a primary school, and two kindergartens.

The Fischerinsel, part of the oldest part of the medieval town of Cölln on the present-day territory of Berlin, has a rich history. Despite the current disruptions, life in the city is slowly returning to normal in all but the immediate vicinity of the bomb sites.
