Underwater cinematic journey could potentially be undertaken by Tom Cruise
In a recent development, director Doug Liman has screened the upcoming documentary Gaucho Gaucho. Meanwhile, the film industry is abuzz with the news of a new collaboration between Tom Cruise and Liman, marking a venture into a genre neither has explored before.
The project in question is Deeper, a movie that was initially picked up by MGM in 2016, following the acquisition of its script from David Goyer's production company Phantom Four, which was originally sold to them by screenwriter Max Landis in 2015. Deeper involves a shamed NASA astronaut who battles mysterious forces in a newly discovered oceanic trench, a plot reminiscent of films like The Martian and Gravity.
Initially, A-list stars Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and Gal Gadot were attached to the Deeper project, but they have since dropped out. The reason for their departure is not publicly known.
Allegations of sexual assault against Max Landis, the original screenwriter of Deeper, were made in 2017. Since then, no significant progress has been made on the Deeper project.
As for Cruise, he is currently juggling multiple projects. He is working on Judy, a collaboration with Alejandro G. Iñàrritu, and Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning. Cruise is also launching himself to space for his and Liman's other movie, a "scary movie" that will mark a departure from their usual action-packed films.
Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly producing the film due to their ongoing collaboration with Tom Cruise on Judy. The release of Deeper may be delayed due to Cruise's busy schedule.
The Deeper project is now being revived by Tom Cruise and Doug Liman, under the production of Smuggler, a film and TV production company. The collaboration between these two industry veterans promises an exciting new venture, though fans may have to wait a bit longer to see the fruits of their labour.
