Music Director Pritam Stresses the Importance of Understanding a Director's Vision

In the world of film music, understanding a director's mindset is paramount, according to renowned music composer Pritam. This is particularly true for his latest soundtrack for the movie Metro...In Dino.

Pritam emphasised that the quality of a musician, singer, or lyric writer is not the primary concern; instead, the alignment with his vision and that of the director is crucial. He explained that he plays a lot of options for directors and producers to help them understand their mindset, ensuring the music aligns with the movie's narrative and emotional impact.

Pritam's long-standing collaboration with director Anurag Basu, spanning over two decades, is a testament to this approach. The two share a creative wavelength, with many ideas exchanged without verbal communication. Pritam mentioned that he will not accept a composition if it does not align with his vision or the director's perspective.

Anurag Basu, the director of Metro...In Dino, stated that he does not enjoy Western musicals. This preference has influenced the music for Metro...In Dino, which features actors like Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Darshana Banik, and others.

Pritam and Anurag Basu share a close and collaborative relationship, with Basu even calling Pritam his "alter-ego." This synergy enables Pritam to craft music that fulfils Basu's vision, enhances the film's emotional impact, and preserves the essence of their earlier successful projects like Life in a Metro, while bringing fresh elements to Metro...In Dino.

Pritam also shared that he can hear how a song will sound even before it is finalised. This intuitive understanding of the music's direction is essential for creating compositions that resonate with the director's vision and the audience.

In Pritam's view, it is essential to consider how the director envisions the movie and to align the music accordingly. After all, at the end of the day, the director is the person who sees the movie, and the music should enhance their vision and the movie's overall impact.

In order to create music that resonates with the director's vision, Pritam emphasized the importance of aligning with the director's perspective, even more so than the quality of the musicians or singers involved. This approach is evident in his long-standing collaboration with director Anurag Basu, as demonstrated by their shared creative wavelength and the impactful music they produce. Pritam's intuitive understanding of the music's direction allows him to craft compositions that enhance the film's narrative and emotional impact, much like his work on movies and TV shows such as 'Metro...In Dino'.
