India has recently experienced significant cloudbursts in several regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Leh, Maharashtra, and the UTs of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. These sudden, intense local rainfall events, often exceeding 100 mm per hour, have resulted in flash floods, causing widespread destruction.

Cloudbursts are characterised by extremely heavy rainfall over a very localized area, typically for a short but high-intensity duration, and are often accompanied by thunderstorms. They are particularly common in mountainous regions due to specific atmospheric and topographical conditions.

The intense localised rainfall rapidly saturates soil and water catchment areas, causing immediate runoff. In mountainous regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, this sudden water surge leads to flash floods, which are fast-moving floods that can cause severe damage downstream. The saturated soil, combined with steep slopes, becomes unstable, triggering landslides and debris flows.

These states' terrain is highly susceptible due to mountainous topography and fragile geology. Cloudbursts here are often linked with rapid snowmelt and glacial melt, exacerbating floods. The region’s narrow river valleys and slopes facilitate rapid runoff and landslide occurrence post-cloudburst events.

The cloudburst that occurred in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh on July 12, 2025, has led to an orange alert being sounded in the area for the next five days due to the prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Historical records show multiple disasters caused by cloudbursts leading to severe flash floods and landslides, making it a critical natural hazard in these areas.

In Uttarakhand, there were at least 24 reported cloudburst events from May 2021 to June 3, 2021. The cloudburst in Dharamshala swept away several cars and damaged many hotels and establishments. Similarly, the 2013 Kedarnath flash flood in Uttarakhand swept away the entire hamlet of Rambara.

Cloudbursts frequently happen in India in connection to monsoon clouds drifting northwards from either the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea, moving up the plains to the mountains. They can also occur due to the mixing of warm air parcels with cooler air, creating sudden condensation events.

Both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister are closely monitoring the situation. The government is taking necessary measures to mitigate the impact of these natural disasters and provide relief to the affected populations.

In conclusion, cloudbursts pose a significant risk, especially in the Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Their sudden extreme precipitation overwhelms natural drainage and soil stability, resulting in flash floods and landslides.
