Underground institution in Neukölln fights closure with a final celebration of defiance
Loophole Berlin, a well-known electronic music club in the heart of Berlin, is facing a challenging period after being permanently banned from hosting concerts at its Boddinstraße home. The ban, announced on July 4, is believed to be the latest blow in a long-running battle between Loophole and some of its neighbors, who have lodged multiple noise complaints.
Despite the setback, Loophole is determined to go out with a bang. The team has announced one final epic party before closing, dubbed the Solidarity Party. This event will take place at Fitzroy and Lark on July 26, with shows happening simultaneously all night between the two venues. The Solidarity Party aims to celebrate the outpouring of support received in the weeks since the announcement.
Loophole, known for its commitment to creativity and diversity, is a space where anyone can be a part of the collective or community without any experience or special skills. Over the years, the venue has been a platform for countless live acts, DJs, drag performances, film clubs, experimental noise nights, live drawing sessions, karaoke, and more.
In an attempt to ease tensions with its neighbors, Loophole has invested thousands in soundproofing and instituted a noise-lowering policy. However, these efforts have not been enough to appease some residents, particularly two neighbors who have actively antagonized the venue and made no effort at compromise.
In light of the ban, Loophole has started a petition declaring that the organization is a crucial cultural institution in Berlin deserving of a new location. The future of Loophole is currently unknown, with the team contemplating finding a new space while still holding out a small glimmer of hope for saving the original.
To help cover ongoing costs, Loophole has set up a GoFundMe with a lease of a 5-year rental term at nearly €4,000 per month. As of now, the fundraiser has raised over €10,500, surpassing the initial goal of €8,000. Presale tickets for the Solidarity Party have sold out, but €20 at the door will grant entry if you arrive early.
Loophole's Solidarity Party at Fitzroy and Lark will take place at Holzmarktstrasse 15-18, starting at 19:00. The event promises to be a memorable one, marking the end of an era for this beloved Berlin institution.
Despite the efforts to compromise and ease tensions with neighbors, Loophole's ban on hosting concerts persists, leading to one final night of musical entertainment at the Solidarity Party. This event is set to take place at Fitzroy and Lark on July 26, showcasing a plethora of live acts, DJs, and performances, making it a memorable farewell to the legendary electronic music club in Berlin.
