Underground hideaway Chinese eatery garners attention in affluent Beverly Hills

In the tranquil end of Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, a new fine dining establishment, 88 Club, has opened its doors. The brainchild of Bravo TV's 'Top Chef' winner Chef Mei Lin and owner Francis Miranda, the restaurant is a tribute to the auspicious number 8 in Chinese culture, symbolizing affluence and good luck. This venture marks Lin's first foray into high-end dining since her acclaimed restaurant, Nightshade, in Los Angeles' Arts District.

88 Club: A Chinatown Speakeasy-Inspired Haven

The design of 88 Club was crafted by Los Angeles-based firm Preen, known for its work on local favorite restaurants, including Pine & Crane and Akasha. The objective was to create an atmosphere that evokes the feeling of a secret hideaway or an exclusive club.

The dimly lit, intimate space is an expert blend of leather and dark woods, softened by accents of pink stone bar tops, scalloped chairs, retro-futuristic bar lamps, and round booths, giving a taste of Hollywood's golden era glamour. The subtle nod to Chef Lin's Chinese menu is found in black lacquered dining room panels and wall sconces, echoing the significance of jade in Chinese tradition, symbolizing protection, prosperity, and longevity.

Gourmet Chinese Delights at 88 Club

88 Club's menu is deeply rooted in the Chinese flavors that Chef Lin grew up cooking with her parents, focusing on comfort classics reinvented with a modern twist. The culinary expertise of long-time collaborator, chef de cuisine Nick Russo, complements Lin's vision.

A selection of dishes, including a sweet and sour squirrel fish and Nam Yu roasted chicken, are set upon a marble rotating lazy Susan, inviting guests to share and savor the vibrant flavors. The primarily French wine list is curated by sommelier and general manager Diana Lee, while Kevin Nguyen contributes to an intriguing cocktail menu, featuring twists on classics such as Mai Tai and Long Island iced tea.

88 Club is located at 9737 S Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, USA. For dining updates and design stories from around the world, subscribe to our newsletter.
