Underdogs Diamond Harbour FC stun East Bengal in Durand Cup final match
Diamond Harbour FC Advances to Durand Cup Final
In a thrilling semi-final match of the 134th Durand Cup, Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC) secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over East Bengal. Based in Kolkata, India, DHFC is a relatively new club, having been founded on April 15, 2022.
Coached by Vicuna, who has yet to lose against East Bengal in his five years in India, DHFC organised into a low block and kept repelling East Bengal's attacks. The team's resilience was evident as they held on despite East Bengal's attempts to equalize.
The first half of the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but the second half was full of action. Mikel Kortazar scored the opening goal for DHFC in the 66th minute, followed by Ali's screamer that levelled the score for East Bengal just a minute later. However, Jobby Justin, who previously played for East Bengal, restored DHFC's lead with a goal in the same minute.
DHFC's 4-3-3 formation relies on the tracking back of the wide forwards, as demonstrated by Justin and Halicharan Narzary. Luka Macjen had another opportunity to score for DHFC but Wahengbam Angousana was off-side.
Mirshad, the goalie for East Bengal, made multiple saves during the match. East Bengal made substitutions to solidify their midfield in the game, introducing Jeakson Singh and Bashim into the fray.
If DHFC continues their current success in the tournament, they will face the defending champions NorthEast United FC in the final of the Durand Cup. Vicuna, the coach of DHFC, had previously stated that they are here to stay and that they are a good team. The final promises to be an exciting clash between two formidable sides.
