Underdog Frech shocks sixth-seed Andreeva; fortunate loser Jabeur pushes forward victoriously
BERLIN - In a stunning upset at the 2025 Berlin Open, Poland's Magdalena Frech turned the tables on seventh-ranked Russian Mirra Andreeva, overcoming a first-set deficit to clinch a hard-fought 2-6 7-5 6-0 victory.
The 18-year-old sixth seed initially seemed on course for a routine win, bagging the opening set with an audacious backhand slice dropshot on her fourth set point.
However, Andreeva, ranked 25th in the world, refused to back down. Breaking serve at the start of the second set, Andreeva appeared to unsettle her opponent as the Russian's composure eroded and unforced errors piled up.
Despite the setback, Frech continued to fight, levelling the match when Andreeva's slice forehand sailed long. The determined Pole then dominated the decider, securing a bagel to seal the victory when Andreeva sent another forehand wide.
This marks the first time Andreeva has lost a deciding set with a 6-0 scoreline in her professional career, and it's Frech's second top ten win of her career.
Meanwhile, lucky loser Ons Jabeur made the most of her opportunity, defeating American Caroline Dolehide 7-6 6-1. The Tunisian, a two-time Wimbledon finalist, seemed comfortable on grass and booked a match against fourth seed Jasmine Paolini.
World number nine Emma Navarro also advanced, easing past Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 6-2 6-3. Navarro broke her opponent three times, cruising through the first set in 30 minutes and wrapping up the win after 77 minutes. She'll next face eighth seed Paula Badosa in the round of 16.
Swiss underdog Rebeka Masarova caused a minor upset, eliminating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-2. Masarova will now square off against world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16.
