Nottingham Forest's forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, has regained consciousness after an induced coma and two surgeries due to a severe collision with the goalpost during a Premier League match. The Nigerian footballer, who previously played for FSV Mainz 05 and Union Berlin, is now observing a steady recovery under medical supervision.

According to his coach, Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Bundesliga striker is recovering well, though he remains in the hospital, gradually moving toward his full recovery. "The operations went well—he's being monitored, but he is recovering," Santo said.

The incident happened during Nottingham's 2-2 draw against Leicester City on May 11, 2025, when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost. Subsequent emergency surgery and a brief period in an induced coma ensued. Thankfully, he is no longer in that comatose state, having shown signs of improvement.

Doctors have thus far kept him hospitalized for further observation. While family members have been granted visits, the precise duration of Awoniyi's stay at the hospital remains undetermined. Espirito Santo acknowledged the difficult ordeal the footballer and the club have endured, stating, "We're concerned, but it's positive."

During the unfortunate incident, Awoniyi sustained a serious abdominal injury—specifically, a ruptured intestine--as he attempted to reach a cross. Barely minutes after being substituted on during the 83rd minute, he injured himself. After a brief pause in the game, Awoniyi returned, visibly struggling.

Club owner, Evangelos Marinakis, expressed frustration in a heated interaction with Santo following the game, though he later clarified his concerns stemmed from a misjudgment by the medical team in deciding Awoniyi's fitness to play. The club issued a statement acknowledging their "shared frustration" with the medical team, given the misstep in allowing the player to continue participating.

In his career spanning from 2015 to present, Taiwo Awoniyi has accumulated extensive experience in the football world. His journey includes a brief stint with Liverpool FC before moving onto play for FSV Mainz 05 from 2019 to 2020 and Union Berlin in 2020 until his current position at Nottingham Forest.
