Underage Female Accused of Participating in Ballymena Disturbances, age 13
Juvenile Charged for Rioting Amidst Violent Unrest in Ballymena
The police have slapped charges on a 13-year-old girl for her role in the riots that broke out in Northern Ireland last month, marking the fifth consecutive night of chaos in Ballymena and nearby areas. The turmoil started following an alleged sexual assault of a girl in County Antrim's town.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has announced five additional arrests, bringing the total number of individuals detained in connection with the disorder to 29. Among the latest arrests, a 13-year-old girl has been charged for her involvement in the third night of the riot that transpired in Ballymena last Wednesday.
A 33-year-old woman has also been charged with child cruelty in relation to the unrest. A 25-year-old man is being held for questioning regarding an arson attack on Larne Leisure Centre, which suffered significant damage. The man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.
A 40-year-old man has been charged with rioting on June 9, the first night of the disorder. Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man has been charged with sending menacing messages through a public electronic communications network and with encouraging or assisting offenses, believing that one or more would be committed. He was further charged with possession of a Class B controlled drug.
This wave of violence began in Ballymena last Monday, following a peaceful demonstration in support of the family of the girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted in the area.
The riots also spread to other parts of Northern Ireland, including Portadown, Larne, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Londonderry, and Coleraine. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones reported that despite tensions, the situation was relatively calm in Northern Ireland on Sunday night. She added that 64 officers injured during the week-long series of riots are on the road to recovery.
The disturbances were fueled by a complex web of factors: the trigger incident, escalation of tensions, racist motives, and broader social and political context. The violent riots quickly transformed from a peaceful protest into a racially-motivated rampage targeting foreign nationals and migrants, with homes and businesses belonging to them getting attacked.
