Barefoot, Battling Bayern Take the Title from Jittery Leverkusen
Undaunted eleven dwarfs, who were football players, propelled FC Bayern Munich to victory for the championship
In the thrilling 1999/2000 German football championship finale, the surprise underdogs of SpVgg Unterhaching took down the favored giants of Bayer Leverkusen, allowing FC Bayern Munich to snatch the title at the last minute.
Heroes in Hiding
With Bayer Leverkusen leading the table going into the final match, it seemed they had the title sewn up. But then, disaster struck when SpVgg Unterhaching’s Michael Ballack scored an own goal after just 20 minutes of play. Despite Bayer's best efforts, Unterhaching held on for the 2-0 victory, while Bayern Munich secured the championship with a win over Werder Bremen.
Focusing on their own celebration, not the rivals' misfortune, Bayern Munich manager, Uli Hoeneß, could hardly contain his excitement: "It's the sensations, the surprises. This is what football is all about. This Bundesliga championship is reserved for us!"
The Path to Glory
Tensions were high leading up to the final match, as Bayer manager Reiner Calmund’s overconfidence started to unravel. "I would sign a contract immediately that guarantees we will always be second in the next five years," he had boasted after securing the second spot following a 9-1 win against SSV Ulm 1846. But in the end, their losing streak and nerves on the field proved costly.
Meanwhile, FC Bayern Munich continued to impress throughout the season, dominating the table for most of the campaign, proving Calmund’s prediction wrong. Their relentless determination was evident as they fought back from a 3-0 deficit against Werder Bremen, securing the stunning victory at the Olympic Stadium.
Champions of the Underdog
The 15th-place finish in the 1998/1999 season raised questions about SpVgg Unterhaching’s ability to compete on the big stage. However, their tenacious performance in the ensuing season proved any doubters wrong. Led by coach Lorenz-Günther Köstner, whose pragmatic approach was not bogged down by frills, the team held their own against the big-name clubs, dismantling any preconceived notions of what it takes to succeed in the Bundesliga.
Ultimately, it was their focus, teamwork, and perseverance that put FC Bayern Munich back on top of the Bundesliga for the sixth time in their storied history.
