Uncovering Lavalorama: A Guide to Nabbing a 20-Year-Old Spectator Using Budgeted Hot Water

Ready for a Radical Rush of Young Talent in Laval?

Gear up for a wild ride as Safia Nolin and Bibi Club take over the Théâtre des Muses in Laval, and all for just a cool ten bucks for the under-30 crowd! Co-motion's Lavalorama series is here to introduce four stunning live performance venues in the heart of Laval - Salle André-Mathieu, Théâtre Marcellin-Champagnat, Annexe 3, and Théâtre des Muses at the Maison des arts - all in a daring attempt to rekindle the passion of the elusive young crowds aged 18 to 30.

The grand plan: to reignite the fire that's been lost in the hearts of the youth due to the pandemic. Geneviève Barrère, our fearless leader under Co-motion's banner, openly admits the struggle to coax these youngsters back to the venues. To finally meet them halfway, she's pulled out all the stops, packaging an irresistible mix of hot talent, low prices, and hit shows that'll make them wonder why they ever missed out!

Jay Scøtt, the Gong Show, and Jo Cormier's latest masterpieces are just a few of the treats on the menu. This marketing move is a calculated gamble, but with the right target in mind, it's one this risk-taker's heart is ready to take.

The secret sauce? Creating a vibe directed squarely at the youth, with a lineup that speaks their language. Barrère believes it takes artists who are as passionate about reviving this scene as she is. And she's found them.

The artistic choices are meticulously crafted "to resonate with this audience," Barrère explains. Sounds simple enough, right? Not so fast. There's one twist: since the tickets are set at bargain-basement prices, she had to enlist artists willing to forgo traditional profit-sharing agreements in favor of a flat fee. They came, Barrère stresses, "because they believed in the cause."

Safia Nolin graces us with her presence in October, with other shows to follow in November, January, and March 2026.

Venturing Off the Beaten Path

Lavalorama is a bold experiment led by Barrère, who's not afraid to push boundaries in search of a winning formula. "Seldom do things fall into your lap, so you gotta try and tinker with fresh ideas," she says.

This year, the financials add up thanks to a grant... from the Fonds régions et ruralité of Quebec's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing! But Barrère warns, future funding will be a tough nut to crack. "Everybody wants a cultural hub in Laval, yet no one's willing to chip in financially. So, how do we keep going?" she questions.

She's already got Hydro-Québec on board, and's considering extending the deal to other local businesses or even shifting the formula entirely. "Consider a free show at Collège Montmorency, with the other shows available for $20?" she mouths, musing out loud about future options.

And what about that highly coveted younger demographic? "They're the key," Barrère concludes, "but results won't be known for a while. Stay tuned!"
